Why Fit Interviews Decide Consulting Offers

Most candidates focus almost entirely on the case interview. The fit interview is treated as an afterthought — something you can wing because it is "just talking about yourself." This is one of the most expensive mistakes a consulting candidate can make.

At McKinsey, the Personal Experience Interview accounts for half the evaluation in final rounds. At Bain, fit conversations run alongside every case interview and are weighted equally. At BCG, fit questions probe leadership, impact, and self-awareness as rigorously as case questions probe problem-solving. A technically strong candidate who cannot articulate their stories clearly and concisely will not receive an offer.

In the GCC market, fit interviews carry additional dimensions. The "why this office?" question is taken seriously by Dubai and Riyadh interviewers — they want to understand your genuine connection to the region, not just a rehearsed line. Cultural awareness, stakeholder sensitivity, and the ability to operate in a multi-cultural environment are directly tested. An ex-pat candidate applying to a GCC office needs to demonstrate local market understanding; a local candidate needs to show they can operate in an internationally demanding environment.

Our fit interview coaching covers all of this. We record mock sessions, review them together, and give you specific, actionable feedback on your delivery, story structure, and how you come across — not just what you say, but how you say it.

Frequently Asked Questions

The Personal Experience Interview, used by Bain and increasingly by McKinsey, asks you to tell in-depth stories about leadership, personal impact, and working in challenging situations. Interviewers probe deeply — expect 10-15 minutes on a single story. We work with you to select and structure 3-5 strong stories from your career that hold up under pressure and demonstrate the qualities MBB looks for.

The "why this office?" question carries more weight in GCC interviews. Interviewers want to understand your genuine connection to the region — do you plan to build a career here, do you understand the local business culture, do you speak Arabic? We help you craft authentic, well-researched answers for each target office. Cultural sensitivity and cross-cultural communication skills are also assessed more explicitly in MENA offices.

For MBB, prepare at least one strong example of each: leadership (led a team through difficulty), impact (drove a measurable outcome), and a personal challenge or failure (and what you learned). For GCC offices, add a story about working across cultures or in an ambiguous, fast-changing environment — these are directly relevant to the consulting work you will do in the region.

The most convincing "why consulting" answers are specific. Generic answers about "learning" and "impact" are forgettable. We help you build a genuine answer that connects your past experience to consulting skills you want to develop, the client exposure you are excited about, and the specific type of work the target firm does in the GCC. The answer should sound like you — not like you read a prep guide.
